Tyres, Balancing & Tracking

Tyres, Balancing & Tracking

Wheel balancing ensures that the weight of the wheel and tyre is even around the axle, and is achieved by placing tiny offsetting weights at specific points around the wheel.

Every time a new tyre is mounted onto an axle, the wheel should be rebalanced to ensure it continues to rotate evenly. Wheels that are not balanced or are out of balance generally produce a vibration that is uncomfortable to the driver and results in premature wearing of tyres, suspension and steering components.

If your wheels are out of balance, you're likely to notice uneven wear on the tyres. Many drivers also notice vibration when travelling over 40 - 50mph, especially if the imbalanced tyres are on the front.

Wheel balancing ensures that the weight of the wheel and tyre is even around the axle, and is achieved by placing tiny offsetting weights at specific points around the wheel.

Incorrect balancing not only causes vibration in the steering wheel and dashboard, but wrongly balanced wheels can also cost you money! Incorrect balancing also causes premature wear of tyres and rapid wear of suspension parts.

If you find that your steering 'wobbles' above a certain speed, this may be a sign that your wheels are not balanced properly. If left, this can not only be uncomfortable to drive, but may affect the performance of your vehicle.

You should also have your wheels checked or balanced after an impact such as a kerb, pothole or stone, when a tyre looks abnormal or every 10,000 miles.

*If you are purchasing new tyres from us, wheel balancing is included within the tyre price so does not need to be purchased separately.

Wheel tracking (or Wheel Alignment) refers to the angle and direction at which the tyres are set. Hitting kerbs or driving at speed through a pothole can result in wheel misalignment. Poorly aligned tyres can affect road holding, increase fuel consumption and decrease the life of your tyres.

Wheel alignment (tracking) problems can be caused by hitting a kerb, driving into a pothole in the road or by excessive wear to steering or suspension components. It is important to get your wheel alignment checked annually to ensure you get the most out of your tyres.

Keep an eye out for unusual wear on your tyres, such as premature wear on the inside or outside shoulder, which could be a sign of incorrect alignment. Wheel alignment involves checking the direction and angle of the wheels. The misalignment positions are often described as toe in, toe out, positive camber or negative camber.

Remember to visit our Wheel Alignment page for details of our wheel aligning service - which is a slightly different process to Wheel Tracking.
